Today we had an assembly at school in honor of Martin Luther King Day. My class had been working on a choral reading excerpt from his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. We were on our way to the gym to get ready for the assembly. One of girls said to me, "Do we have to be up on the stage the whole time?"
Now, our old school has a very tiny gym, and I knew that our principal was expecting the whole school to be there, so space was a premium. I knew that we had to stay on the stage for space issues alone.
"Yes, we will. We'll be sitting on the risers before our turn, then we'll stand to do our speech, then we'll bask in the applause, and then we'll sit down on the risers for the remaining assembly."
"Wow, that's scary," she said. "It's nervewracking. I read that word in a book."
"It's a good word," I said.
