Today at about 11:00 the office called to my room. They said that a family had donated yarn and knitting needles for my club. And could I send a couple of students down to get it? Yes, I could, and did. Soon the office called again.
"Could you send down about 5 more students?" they asked. So, I did.
Soon the students came back. With boxes. Lots of them. Boxes and boxes. Maybe about 14 or so. Wow, I thought. That's a lot of yarn...
We were watching a movie, since it was the last day before spring break and I didn't feel like teaching...But during lunch, three of my girls started to go through the boxes. And it was like Christmas! There was all kinds of yarn (one box held only yarn for knitting baby garments!), and some needles. Besides knitting paraphenalia, there were croche needles and pattern books, half finished projects, and some boxes held the specific "string" used for tatting, the art of making lace. The kids were really excited about the contents in every box.
The story behind the donation is that it came from a family in our school's community who's grandma had recently passed away. She obviously was the crafty one. The family, not knowing what to do with all of it, called the school to see if we could use it. The office gals knew of my Friday Afternoon Knitting Club, so said "Sure!". And the rest is history.
Going through those boxes was like taking a glimpse into someone's life. It was a bitter sweet experience, and I think the kids felt it, too.
Later, as the movie came to a close, there was knitting going on. Kids were teaching others. After we got ready to go home and were waiting to go to an assembly the last half hour of the day, I finally realized my Knitting Club dream: boys in my class had grabbed knitting needles, and were having the girls show them how to cast on and knit.
I'm sure the old gal was watching us from somewhere, and smiling to see these kids all excited about knitting.
